Ball joint’s are a very important part of a vehicle’s suspension, they are a spherical type bearing that connects the control arm to the steering knuckle. If they are to completely fail, it can extend the length of suspension movement drastically, which could damage your car or even cause an accident as it will also restrict steering.

Ball joint’s are considered a Roadworthy item, when they show signs of wear, they will generally have excess movement in the joint which can be tested / checked by most mechanics.

Ball joint replacement Gold Coast is carried out at our mechanical workshop and will have various labour times, some can be changed in less than 30 minutes however can become a much more serious repair as shown in the picture below.

The above image shows the knuckle removed from a 2007 R51 Nissan Pathfinder. To replace the ball joint in this vehicle, the ball joint needs to be pressed out which we use a special tool as shown below.

This tool allows us to replace the ball joint with the control arm still attached to the vehicle which saves the customer on labour time. Unfortunately, it can sometimes be hard to provide an exact quote to replace these as they are an item that isn’t commonly replaced, therefore they are prone to rusting into the knuckle or control arm. When this occurs additional labour time is required to allow for this.

Ball Joint Replacement

Ball joints are a very important safety component on your vehicles suspension system.

The scary part is that a lot of mechanics don’t know how to check them correctly. They are a roadworthy item and are just as important as things like brakes and tyres!

Ball joints work similar to your hip joint.

They are a spherical joint which connect suspension components together. Failure of a ball joint can be catastrophic. Some of the more common vehicles that we replace lower ball joints on include Jeeps, Ford Falcons and Ford Territory.

In these particular vehicles, when the lower ball joint fails the wheel will literally go straight into the guard panel, damaging the body work and losing steering control to that side of the vehicle.

The picture below shows complete failure of a ball joint on an AU Ford falcon. Scary!

We replace ball joints regularly on vehicles such as Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Navara D40 and Mitsubishi Pajero to name a few.

Control Arm Replacement

Something to also note, manufacturers have altered the setup on some vehicle’s where a ball joint cannot be purchased separately. In this instance, the control arm is supplied with the ball joint already attached to it. The good news is that we can sometimes source generic brands of control arms to keep costs down as much as possible.

The above image shows the upper control arm on a 2003 Toyota Hiace, the design of the ball joint in this model ensures that the control arm has to be replaced as the ball joint isn’t designed to be removed or replaced. The new suspension arm comes complete.

Important Note Regarding Jeep Cherokee Ball Joint Replacement:

Cherokee is one of the most common vehicles that we replace ball joints on at Ashmore RWC and Automotive. A lot of places will say that you have to replace the complete control arm which can be very expensive.

The good news is that on many of the Jeep models, the Lower Ball joint can usually be changed on its own, saving the customer valuable $$$. It is also worth noting that when the Jeeps starts to get a small amount excess movement / play in the lower ball joint, it is not uncommon for this movement to increase substantially in the short space of time which will deem the vehicle dangerous.

FAQ

What happens if you see something that needs repair while you're doing my service?

Sometimes during a car service we may uncover a repair that needs to be carried out. If this happens when we are servicing your car, we'll contact you immediately to let you know the repair needed, the cost involved and to request your approval before carrying out the repair. This way there are no nasty surprises or 'bill shock' when you come to collect your car.

Repairs that often come up include:

  • In tank fuel filter replacement
  • Timing belt replacement
  • Air filter replacement
  • Spark plugs
  • Cabin filter
  • Brake fluid flush
  • Coolant flush
How often should I get my car serviced?

We always recommend 6 month/10,000km service intervals.

Perhaps you have been told this is not necessary anymore - for certain car models the service interval (the period of time between recommended services) can now can range from 10,000 to 25,000kms and even up to 2 years.

Car engines and oil quality has improved greatly over the years and as a result, manufacturers have increased the service intervals.

Unfortunately this may offer a false sense of security to car owners. Sticking to the recommended manufacturer service intervals does not guarantee your engine will remain trouble-free.

In most car manuals, it will mention factors that impact the service intervals like personal driving habits and road conditions where the service intervals by kilometres do not apply.

That's why we think sticking to 6-months / 10,000km is best. It helps to keep your car in good condition and maximises the opportunity to be proactive about repairs before they become an issue.

Why is it so important to change your car oil?

Just like humans need water, cars need oil. Without it, your car won't be lubricated, causing deterioration inside your engine and potentially everyone's worst nightmare - a breakdown.

Water vapour, unburnt fuel and gases from the combustion process can overload your engine oil and these combine to form sludge deposits on your engine. Engine sludge clogs the oil galleries and limits lubrication to moving parts inside the engine which can lead to costly repairs.

Your car needs to drive 15 – 20 kilometres for the engine to fully warm up and reduce the rate of contamination. This is why we change the engine oil.

Why do you use a specific type of oil?

When poor quality or incorrect oil is used in an engine it often doesn’t have the right additives or viscosity to begin with, which leads to premature sludge build-up on your engine.  On many occasions we’ve seen a vehicle with a full service history from the manufacturer arrive with a sludgy engine. Not good!

That’s why using a quality oil (and changing it regularly) is essential.

When you visit us, take a look at our oil shelf. We usually have over 20 different variants of engine oil in stock.  We use Penrite Oils.

We’re serious about putting the right oil in your car and helping your engine last the distance – not adding you to the growing number of car drivers needing an engine replacement.

What's a Logbook Service?

A Logbook Service refers to what the car manufacturer (e.g. Toyota, Mazda, BMW) specifies will need to be replaced / checked / cleaned adjusted during a particular service in order to maintain a vehicle’s warranty. You don't have to go to the dealership for your logbook servicing. We stick to the manufacturer's guidelines to ensure you can visit us (usually at a more affordable price) while maintaining your manufacturer warranty.

What is a Capped Price Service?

Capped price car servicing is generally a dealer service to entice customers. It's a service at a specific capped price. Ensure you check what is actually being carried out on the service. We can’t guarantee to beat pricing for a dealer capped-price service but please don’t hesitate to ask if you’re looking for an alternative.

What is a Fixed Price Service?

Fixed price car servicing is very similar to capped price servicing. The idea is that you book your vehicle in for a service based on an initial quotation (usually online). On collection of your vehicle, the final invoice price will be exactly what you were quoted.
