Car Water Pump Replacement – Gold Coast

Do you have a leaking car water pump? Or has your someone told you that your water pump is noisy or has a leak? At Ashmore RWC and Automotive Services we replace water pumps on a range of vehicles makes and models.

What is a car water pump and what does it do?

Your car’s water pump is a very important part of your engine. It pumps the coolant through the engine and radiator to keep it running at the right temperature.

Some water pumps can replaced in an hour although some can be alot more time intensive. This will depend on the design and configuration of your car’s engine especially if the water pump is run by, or restricted by, the engine timing belt. What this means is that in order to replace the water pump, the timing belt will also require removal.

One of the major causes for premature car water pump failure is contamination in the cooling system. Unfortunately it is common practice for people to purchase the cheapest coolant they can find. Just like the saying “oils ain’t oils,” well “coolants ain’t coolants.” There are different types for different vehicles. The most common ones will either be green, red or blue.

When replacing a water pump, the cooling system should be flushed, cleaned and refilled with fresh coolant.

Many parts warranties will not cover your car if the cooling system is not flushed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some signs your water pump is failing include:

  • Corroded water pump
  • Car overheating
  • Coolant leaks
  • Whining noises

The water pump pushes coolant around the engine and through the radiator. It keeps the engine at a safe operating temperature. If the pump stops moving coolant properly, the engine heats up fast and can suffer serious damage.

Common signs are a coolant leak under the front of the car, the temperature gauge climbing or fluctuating, and a whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine. You might also see coolant residue around the pump itself. Steam from under the bonnet means stop driving and let it cool.

No. A failing pump can let the engine overheat, and an overheated engine can warp the head or blow the head gasket. That turns a moderate repair into a major one. If you suspect the pump, get it looked at before you drive further.

The bearing inside wears out over time, or the seal starts leaking coolant. Old or dirty coolant speeds this up because it becomes corrosive and eats at the internals. Age and kilometres are the main factors. Heat here on the Gold Coast adds to the load.

Often yes. On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt and sits behind the same covers. Since most of the labour is in getting to that area, it makes sense to replace the belt, pump, tensioner and idlers together. Doing them separately means paying that labour twice.

It depends on the vehicle and how hard the pump is to reach. A pump driven by the timing belt costs more because of the extra labour and parts involved. A pump driven by the drive belt is usually cheaper to access. The accurate way to price it is a quick check of your make and model, then a quote.

A straightforward pump can be a same-day job. If the timing belt has to come off, or the pump sits deep in the engine, it takes longer. We will give you a time frame with the quote.

The pump fails completely, the coolant stops circulating, and the engine overheats. From there you risk a warped head, a blown head gasket, or a cracked block. Those repairs cost far more than the pump. Catching it early is always the cheaper path.

Yes. Any water pump job involves draining and refilling the cooling system, so fresh coolant goes in as part of the work. Clean coolant at the correct mix protects the new pump and the rest of the system.

A quality pump fitted with fresh coolant should last many years and a good stretch of kilometres. Replacing it alongside the timing belt, where applicable, means both are on the same service interval from that point.
