One of the most common questions we get is about the cost of a car service. The honest answer is: it depends. Here is what affects the price and what you can typically expect to pay.
Standard service vs logbook service
There are two main types of car service. A standard service covers the basics: engine oil and filter replacement, a safety check, and fluid top-ups. A logbook service follows your manufacturer’s schedule and includes all the items required at that specific service interval.
If your car is still under manufacturer warranty, you should be getting logbook services. If your warranty has expired and you want to keep your car in good condition and running reliably, a standard service is fine for most situations.
How much does a basic car service cost?
On the Gold Coast, a General Service at an independent workshop starts from around $285 for most everyday passenger vehicles. This typically includes oil and filter, a check of fluid levels, tyre pressures, brakes and lights.
How much does a logbook service cost?
Logbook service pricing varies more widely because the inclusions depend on your car’s specific service schedule. Most Gold Coast workshops can charge anywhere between $285 to $5,000 for a logbook service on a standard passenger vehicle. European cars and prestige vehicles tend to be at the higher end due to the type of oil, parts required and additional inspection items.
What affects the price of a car service?
- The type of oil your car requires (full synthetic oil costs more than semi-synthetic or conventional)
- The service interval and what items are due at that milestone
- The make and model of your vehicle
- Whether any additional repairs are flagged during the inspection
When you get a quote from Ashmore RWC, the price we quote is the price you pay for the service. If we find anything else that needs attention during the check, we will tell you about it and give you a quote before doing anything.
Why are dealership services so much more expensive?
Dealerships generally charge significantly more for the same service because of higher overheads and, in some cases, because they know many customers believe they have to use the dealership to protect their warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, you do not have to use the dealership for servicing. Any qualified mechanic using the correct parts and oil can service your car without affecting your warranty.
