How Much Does a Roadworthy Certificate Cost in Queensland?

Whether you are selling your car, re-registering it or transferring ownership, you need a roadworthy certificate. In Queensland, this is officially called a Safety Certificate. Here is what it costs and what to expect.

What does a roadworthy certificate cost in QLD?

In Queensland, roadworthy certificate fees are based on pricing guidelines set by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). The fee is set by QLD Transport and is the same at all approved inspection stations. Roadworthy certificates typically range from $99 to $250 depending on the vehicle type. Get in touch with us for our current pricing, as fees are updated by QLD Transport from time to time.

Keep in mind that the inspection fee is separate from any repairs that might be needed to bring your car up to standard. If your car needs work to pass a roadworthy, the mechanic must quote you before carrying out any repairs.

What is included in a roadworthy inspection?

A Roadworthy Inspection / Safety Certificate Inspection covers the core safety components of your vehicle:

  • Brakes and brake components
  • Steering and suspension
  • Tyres, wheels and rims
  • Lights and electrical components
  • Windscreen, windows and mirrors
  • Seatbelts and restraints
  • Engine and driveline
  • Exhaust and emissions
  • A road test

It is worth knowing that a roadworthy inspection is a safety check, not a comprehensive mechanical inspection. A car can pass a roadworthy but still have mechanical issues that are not assessed under the standard checklist. If you want a thorough once-over before buying a used car, a pre-purchase inspection covers much more.

What happens if my car fails a roadworthy?

If your vehicle does not pass, you have 14 days to get the required repairs done and bring it back for a follow-up inspection at no extra charge, as long as you return to the same workshop. At Ashmore RWC, we carry out most repairs in-house, so you do not need to go somewhere else and come back.

Common reasons for failing a roadworthy include worn brake pads, bald or damaged tyres, cracked windscreens, faulty lights, and suspension components that are past their best. If any of these come up during your inspection, we will give you a clear quote before touching anything.

How long does a Safety Certificate last?

For private sellers, a roadworthy certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000km, whichever comes first. For licensed car dealers, it is 3 months or 1,000km. Once it expires, a new inspection will be required.

Who can issue a roadworthy certificate in Queensland?

Only approved inspection stations licensed by QLD Transport can issue Safety Certificates. Ashmore RWC is an approved station for cars and trailers. We are not a mobile roadworthy service. Your vehicle needs to come to our workshop at 2/8 Green Glen Road, Ashmore. If your vehicle is unregistered and cannot be driven, contact us to discuss pick-up options.

Is a roadworthy the same as a Certificate of Inspection?

No. A Certificate of Inspection (COI) is a separate accreditation required for passenger transport vehicles, including Uber, DiDi, Ola and taxis. Not every approved inspection station is accredited for both. Ashmore RWC holds both accreditations.
